Kilpatrick Turnpike

Kilpatrick Turnpike car accidents in the Oklahoma City metro

By Jason Hicks

Short answer

Short answer. Kilpatrick Turnpike (I-344) crashes are handled by Highway Patrol turnpike troops, which "have sole law enforcement authority on the turnpikes of this state" (OAC 595:1-1-3(a)(2)). If someone is injured or a driven or attended vehicle is damaged, each driver must give their "correct name, address and registration number" and render "reasonable assistance" to any person injured (47 O.S. § 10-104).

On request, each driver must also exhibit "his or her driver license and his or her security verification form" (47 O.S. § 10-104). OHP collision reports are requested through Service Oklahoma (see Report below).

Troop YE covers the John Kilpatrick Turnpike.

The road

According to the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, the Kilpatrick runs 31 miles from I-44/Turner Turnpike and I-35 to I-40, continuing to SH-152, and averages 76,748 vehicles a day (OTA 2026 Outlook). It crosses Oklahoma and Canadian counties (OTA 2025 traffic map). OTA began widening between Wilshire Boulevard and north of NW 122nd Street in February 2026, with completion expected in spring 2027 (OTA release, Feb. 20, 2026). Note work-zone lane shifts in your crash notes.

For the rules drivers must follow in construction areas, see work-zone crash rules in Oklahoma. For crashes on ice or in heavy rain, see crashes on ice or in bad weather.

Who investigates and how to get the report

  • Agency: the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Troop YE (Kilpatrick Turnpike), (405) 222-3165, per the DPS Troops page. A DPS rule gives turnpike troops "sole law enforcement authority on the turnpikes of this state" and lists "Troop YE: Kilpatrick, (405) 222-3165" (Okla. Admin. Code 595:1-1-3(a)(2), https://rules.ok.gov/code?q=595%3A1-1-3).
  • Report: OHP collision reports are requested from Service Oklahoma with the Collision Request for Records (Form 303RM-C).

Crash data

Federal fatal-crash data (NHTSA FARS) records 1, 2 and 4 fatal crashes on the Kilpatrick Turnpike in Oklahoma and Canadian counties in 2022, 2023 and 2024 (2024 is the preliminary FARS file) (FARS national data files, https://static.nhtsa.gov/nhtsa/downloads/FARS/2024/National/FARS2024NationalCSV.zip and the 2022–2023 equivalents; primary-trafficway coding). Non-fatal counts by road are not available from a state source used here. See Kilpatrick Turnpike crash numbers from state and federal data. Fatal-crash counts inside Oklahoma City limits use a different geography (city limits, not counties), so they differ from these county figures; see fatal-crash counts on I-35, I-40, I-240 and I-44 in Oklahoma City.
