Edmond car crash: getting the report and knowing who handles what

By Jason Hicks

405 Injury is based in Oklahoma City.

Short answer

Short answer. Edmond Police accident reports become available through the department's Records Division within five working days and can be requested online or in person with a photo ID. A crash on I-35 or outside city limits may have been worked by another agency, so check the agency named on your paperwork before you request the report.

An Edmond crash can leave records in three places: the police report, the municipal court file if anyone was ticketed, and, later, the court and insurance paperwork. This guide follows that order.

Which agency has the report

  • Edmond Police Department: crashes inside Edmond city limits. Its Traffic Unit's Collision Investigator Unit "investigates motor vehicle collisions on public roads and some on private property."
  • Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP): OHP has primary authority and must investigate collisions on all interstates, including inside city limits; local police authority there is supplemental. State law directs OHP "To investigate and report traffic collisions on all interstate and defense highways and on all highways outside of incorporated municipalities" (47 O.S. § 2-117(B)(10)), and the Attorney General's formal opinion addresses that duty (2025 OK AG 11 (Aug. 27, 2025)). Check the agency named on your paperwork. OHP reports are requested from Service Oklahoma with the Collision Request for Records (Form 303RM-C).
  • Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office: the Sheriff's page says its Patrol Division is "responsible for patrolling 720 square miles" and its traffic unit includes "a specialized fatality crash investigation squad" (Oklahoma County Sheriff). The county's Open Records Request page lists a Sheriff's Office contact for open records requests; it does not post a separate crash-report process.
  • University of Central Oklahoma Police: UCO says its officers "are responsible for enforcing laws on campus property and adjoining Edmond city streets and may issue citations, arrest, impound vehicles, and conduct official investigations" (UCO Department of Public Safety). UCO open records requests "must be submitted using UCO's official online request form"; questions go to openrecords@uco.edu (UCO Open Records Request).

If anyone is hurt or killed, the driver must give notice "by the quickest means of communication" to the local police department when the crash is inside a city, or otherwise to the county sheriff or the nearest Highway Patrol office (47 O.S. § 10-107).

When Edmond Police may not write a report

The Traffic Unit page says:

  • "Minor, non-injury collision during inclement weather – you are not required to file a collision report; exchange your personal and insurance information with the other driver."
  • "Injury collision – a report is required."
  • "Non-injury collision – a report is required in most instances."

Whether or not a report is written, state law still applies. In a crash that injures or kills someone or damages a vehicle someone is driving or attending, each driver must give their name, address and vehicle registration number, show their driver license and security verification form on request, and give reasonable assistance to anyone injured (47 O.S. § 10-104).

The duty to stop after a crash that damages a vehicle changed on November 1, 2026. From November 1, 2026, 47 O.S. § 10-103 covers "damage to property or a vehicle that is driven or attended by any person" (47 O.S. § 10-103, version effective Nov. 1, 2026). Before November 1, 2026, the rule covered an "accident resulting only in damage to a vehicle which is driven or attended by any person" (47 O.S. § 10-103, version in force before Nov. 1, 2026).

A separate written report to the Department of Public Safety under 47 O.S. § 10-108 is not an immediate duty. Except for collisions on private property, it is due only "if settlement of the collision has not been made within six (6) months after the date of the accident", and a settlement must be reported by the parties. The dollar threshold is $3,000 from November 1, 2026 (47 O.S. § 10-108, version effective Nov. 1, 2026), when this sentence is added: "No report is required when all parties involved agree to exchange information and there is no injury, no death, and no damage to property other than vehicles." Before November 1, 2026, the statute's threshold was $300 (47 O.S. § 10-108, version in force before Nov. 1, 2026). Ask a lawyer which version applies to your crash.

Tickets and court records: Edmond Municipal Court

If an Edmond officer wrote a ticket at the crash, it goes to Edmond Municipal Court at 120 E. Main St.; (405) 359-4360; court@edmondok.gov. Court files are requested with the "Court Records Request" form on the City's JustFOIA portal, not the police form. (Police FAQ; Records Request FAQ)

A ticket and an injury claim are separate matters.

Fatal crashes on Edmond roads, 2022–2024

NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) recorded 17 fatal crashes with the Edmond city code from 2022 through 2024, which killed 20 people.¹ FARS figures were pulled from NHTSA's national FARS data files on October 28, 2026. The 2024 figures come from the FARS Annual Report File, preliminary. FARS coded all 17 to Oklahoma County. The road counts below match FARS road names, so each is "at least" that many.

Road (FARS road name match)Total
US-77 (recorded as US-77 Broadway Extension, US-77 S Broadway and US-77 E 2nd St)at least 4²
I-35at least 2³

Per-year counts behind each row: ¹ Crashes: 2022: 6 / 2023: 7 / 2024, preliminary: 4. Deaths: 2022: 7 / 2023: 8 / 2024, preliminary: 5. ² US-77, at least 2022: 1 / 2023: 2 / 2024, preliminary: 1. ³ I-35, at least 2022: 0 / 2023: 2 / 2024, preliminary: 0. Case-level records are public in NHTSA's FARS database.

  • Every other primary road name in the Edmond records appears once. One record's road is coded "No Name" and one names a parking lot.
  • None of the 17 Edmond records names I-44.
  • Counts are by the primary road field; the second road field adds no crashes to either row.
  • Counts only. Traffic volume isn't accounted for, so these numbers don't show how risky a road is to drive. FARS covers fatal crashes only.
  • How FARS places a crash. All 17 records carry the FARS city name Edmond.

The City's Traffic Unit page says accident reports are available within 5 working days of the incident through the Records Division. You can request one online or in person with a valid photo ID.

Will Edmond Police write a report for a minor crash in bad weather?

Not necessarily. The Traffic Unit page says that for a minor, non-injury collision during inclement weather, you are not required to file a collision report and should exchange personal and insurance information with the other driver. An injury collision requires a report.

Where do I deal with a ticket from an Edmond crash?

Edmond Municipal Court, 120 E. Main St. Court records are requested with the City's "Court Records Request" form, separate from police records.
