Highway crashes

Car crashes on Oklahoma City highways: which road, which agency, which guide

By Jason Hicks

Short answer

Short answer. OHP has primary authority and must investigate collisions on all interstates, including inside city limits; local police authority there is supplemental (47 O.S. §2-117). On a turnpike or a city street the responding agency can differ, so check the agency named on your paperwork and start with the guide for your road below.

Oklahoma City sits where several interstates and a turnpike meet, and a crash on one of them can bring a different agency than a crash on a city street a mile away. This page compares who responds by type of road, explains what to tell the agency about where you were, and points you to the 405 guide for your road. For the scene itself, see what to do after a crash.

Who investigates depends on the type of road

The agency that shows up, and writes the report, isn't the same on every road. Here's what the sources say for each type of road.

Interstates. OHP has primary authority and must investigate collisions on all interstates, including inside city limits; local police authority there is supplemental.

Section 2-117 lists this among the Highway Patrol's duties:

"To investigate and report traffic collisions on all interstate and defense highways and on all highways outside of incorporated municipalities, and may investigate traffic collisions within any incorporated municipality upon request of the local law enforcement agency, and to secure testimony of witnesses or of persons involved;" (47 O.S. § 2-117(B)(10))

The Oklahoma Attorney General addressed this in 2025 OK AG 11 (Aug. 27, 2025, to Sen. Mark Mann). The AG's announcement quoted the opinion as concluding that the Highway Patrol's interstate authority "is a mandatory duty that cannot be abdicated in favor of local law enforcement, either in urban or rural areas."

Check the agency named on your paperwork.

Turnpikes. A Department of Public Safety rule speaks to turnpikes separately: "Turnpike troops of the Highway Patrol have sole law enforcement authority on the turnpikes of this state" (Okla. Admin. Code 595:1-1-3(a)(2)). The Highway Patrol's troop list shows troop "YE" for the "Kilpatrick Turnpike," at "(405)222-3165."

City streets and county roads. Off the interstates and turnpikes, the responding agency depends on where the crash happened, for example inside a city or in an unincorporated part of the county. The report itself shows who responded.

Telling the agency exactly where you were

On a highway, "near downtown" can mean several miles of road and more than one agency. When you call, or when an officer asks, these details help place the crash:

  • Which road and which direction, for example northbound or westbound.
  • The nearest exit or interchange, or the cross street on the sign.
  • A mile marker, if you can see one safely. For example, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority describes its Kilpatrick widening as running from Wilshire Boulevard "(mm 116)" to north of NW 122nd "(mm 120)".
  • Which lane or shoulder the vehicles ended up in.
  • The city or town name on the nearest sign.

Write the same details in your own notes. They make it easier to match your crash to the right report later.

Notice and the report

Oklahoma law requires the driver in an injury or fatal crash to "immediately, by the quickest means of communication, give notice of such accident to the local police department, if such accident occurs within a municipality, or to the office of the county sheriff or the nearest office of the State Highway Patrol after complying with the requirements of Section 47-10-104" (47 O.S. § 10-107). The scene duties are covered in what to do after a crash.

Once you know which agency responded, see how to request a crash report. Each road guide lists the request channel for the agencies on that road.

Work zones and construction

Construction changes lanes, speeds and exits. See crashes in highway work zones.

On the Kilpatrick, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority said in February 2026 that widening between Wilshire and north of NW 122nd "is expected to be completed in spring 2027, weather permitting." OTA's 2026 Labor Day travel advisory listed "intermittent lane shifts through spring 2027."

Crash numbers by road

Federal and state crash numbers for Oklahoma City are on two 405 pages: Oklahoma City crash data and fatal-crash counts by road inside Oklahoma City limits. The fatal-crash page counts crashes inside city limits, while the road guides use county-based counts. Don't compare the two sets of numbers or add them together.

If a semi or work truck was involved

A crash with a commercial vehicle can involve more records than a crash between two cars. See records after a crash with a semi or work truck.

Which county and which court

The metro highways cross more than one county, and the county where the damage happened can matter for where a lawsuit is filed. See filing a car accident lawsuit in Oklahoma County, which lists the counties the main metro highways cross on official ODOT maps.

Deadlines

Most Oklahoma injury lawsuits against another driver fall in the two-year category, "an action for injury to the rights of another, not arising on contract" (12 O.S. § 95(A)(3)). A crash with a city, county or state vehicle adds a written-notice process. See Oklahoma car accident deadlines and government vehicle accidents.

Common questions

Which 405 guide covers my Oklahoma City highway crash?

Use the "Find your road" table above. I-35, I-40, I-240 and the Kilpatrick Turnpike each have a guide, and I-44 and I-235 are covered in a section of the I-35 guide.

Does the Highway Patrol handle interstate crashes inside Oklahoma City?

OHP has primary authority and must investigate collisions on all interstates, including inside city limits; local police authority there is supplemental (47 O.S. § 2-117(B)(10) and (D)(2), 2025 OK AG 11). Check the agency named on your paperwork.

Who handles a crash on a turnpike?

A Department of Public Safety rule says "Turnpike troops of the Highway Patrol have sole law enforcement authority on the turnpikes of this state" (OAC 595:1-1-3(a)(2)).

What location details should I give after a highway crash?

The road and direction, the nearest exit or cross street, a mile marker if you can see one safely, the lane, and the city name on the nearest sign.

Where are the crash numbers for Oklahoma City highways?

On the 405 crash data and fatal crashes by road pages. This page doesn't repeat them.
